Extra Credit Options
Please Read Before Attempting an Extra Credit Assignment
Extra credit is a way for students who have scored poorly in a class to increase their overall class average. It is not a replacement for regular classwork, and it will not be enough to "save you" from a semester of poor choices. Since this is my philosophy on extra credit, this year, I am adding an additional assignment for all extra credit work. It is this:
Students who wish to complete one of the extra credit assignments below, must write a letter to Ms. Ferrell explaining why they want to complete the extra credit and why they feel the extra credit is necessary - what specific assignments or choices led to the need for extra credit. The letter must be persuasive and must convince Ms. Ferrell to allow the student to complete extra credit. The letter itself is not for a grade or part of a grade, but it must be submitted before the extra credit will be accepted.
If the letter is not convincing, extra credit may not be approved. Students who are not granted approval may submit, in writing, an appeal for reconsideration.
Only one letter and one appeal are allowed each nine weeks. It is strongly recommended to submit the letter before beginning the extra credit work.
If students have not heard back from Ms. Ferrell within one week, they may ask Ms. Ferrell for the verdict as often as necessary until they have gotten an answer (the answer will not change with repeated asking). This implies that it is necessary to begin the extra credit process several weeks before the end of the quarter.
If additional mini-extra credit options are given in class, the letter of request is not required unless it was specifically asked for when the assignment was provided.

Inspire Yourself
What: Copy a set of 15 quotes by hand and write an essay
When: Each nine weeks (due a full 7 days before the end of the quarter)
Details:
The extra credit assignment below can only be turned in for credit once every nine weeks. If the project is done more than once during the year, a different quote must be chosen for the essay (and/or the second choice can only be completed once). Follow the instructions at the top of the extra credit page to complete the assignment. Both option choices will give equal credit. The due dates are assigned by the teacher in class and occur toward the end of each nine weeks. Use the due dates given in class, NOT the ones listed on the document. Please note that extra credit work is not accepted late, but can be kept and used for a future due date.

Research Skills
What: Select a topic that you are interested researching and write a research paper
When: Each nine weeks
Details:
Students who wish to earn extra credit are allowed to write a research report (with correct MLA bibliography using at least five reliable sources) on a topic of their choice. It can not be the same topic you are using for another class. The research paper must have an introduction, body, conclusion, and bibliography. There is no minimum page limit, but effort is definitely taken into account. All sources must be credible and listed in the bibliography. Plagiarism will result in no credit, potential denial of future extra credit opportunities, and an office referral.
